All quite exciting at Gunnersbury Station this afternoon. I was on the District line heading back from town and there was a dribbling drunk sitting opposite, with a roll-up fag hanging from his gob (unlit) and a can of beer. He looked and smelled dreadful.

After Turnham Green he tried to light the cigarette and I said quite loudly  - don't light that cigarette on this tube. He just laughed and carried on trying to light his lighter. Eventually he managed to get the cigarette lit, and got up to stand by the door for Gunnersbury. As he did, he dropped his fag and it set fire to some bloke's trousers, who was also standing at the door. They went up in flames and there was a minute of frantic activity whilst several people were patting his trousers and squirting water bottle over his lower leg. He had a big burn hole in his trousers and was quite badly burnt on his shin.

At that point we arrived at Gunnersbury and the bloke decided not to get off as I told him he wouldn't be leaving the station. He sat back down again.

We went and told the guard about it, who was pretty sceptical at first "Oh yeah? Someone set fire to someone on the tube? Yeah right". But then he saw the guy's trousers and called ahead to Kew to have the bloke stopped and taken off the tube.

Gosh all very exciting. Poor chap though, he had to go to hospital to have his burns treated - not the Friday night he had planned.

I hope they got hold of the drunk and took him in.
