The same thing happened to the coal industry, which was hit by the double whammy of becoming ecologically unacceptable because of the amount of pollution it produced, and having its price seriously undercut by the import of much cheaper coal from the Central European countries. Again, this is not a party political point saying 'Thatcher was right' or 'Thatcher was wrong', but simply an unpleasant fact of global economics which all governments, even the theoretical one run by Mr. Corbyn, have to cope with. In a global economy, simply saying, 'We'd do things differently', without defining precisely what, doesn't solve the problem. |
