I find the whole this rather puzzling. As an IT man I know how the code would have been developed, tested and deployed into the device that controls all the engine settings. This is a process that involves many people and has a clear trail of evidence for anyone to follow. The idea that someone at VW made a deliberate attempt to circumvent the testing seems unlikely as they would know how easily this would be revealed. It seems more likely to me that it is, at least, partially cock-up rather than conspiracy. Perhaps the scenario where the driven wheels are turning but the trailing wheels are not is interpreted by the EMU as wheel spin and the power / emission is controlled to counter this. This test in the code would have to be revealed to the testing authorities of course but it would be an innocent mistake that delivered the dodgy testing data. |
