| Yes, Larry, we should be clear on the language. Migrants: people travelling to other countries for economic advantage. Refugees: people travelling to other countries to escape war, famine, political oppression, disease. Genuine refugees are expected to seek sanctuary in the first safe country they get to. People: everyone, so not much use as a definition of a socio-economic group. There are currently over 3 million Syrian and Afghan refugees in Turkey, Jordan and Lebanon. In the latter two that is around a 25% increase to their indigenous population. The UK is the largest donor of aid to those refugees through the provision of shelter, food, healthcare and education services. Our compassion should not be in question. There are almost no refugees among the people trying to get to the UK. They are economic migrants. They have passed through a number of safe countries before reaching Calais or wherever. Allowing these migrants in to the UK will only encourage increasing numbers of people to try to make thie same perilous, pointless journey. |
