| It seems appropriate that on a discussion forum we might acknowledge the power of words and they way they shape our views. As more and more 'migrants' die in an attempt to flee their home countries I wonder how use of such a word shapes our response to such tragedies. I wonder if the news reported them as 'refugees' or even as 'people' we might see more of a public display of compassion rather than the socially acceptable poison that people feel it's acceptable to display when people lose their lives in such a tragic manner. The reporting of such events is deliberate. The use of the word 'migrant' and all the ignorance and fear attached to the word do nothing but encourage the worst in us as people. When we fail to see humans as human there is a tendency toward indifference and, at worst, outright racism and xenophobia. No life is worth less than another. We must remember our humanity and not fall victim to much of the media's vitriolic reporting. |
