Having resolved not to go back after an unsatisfactory experience first time around I did revisit a few months back. A former work colleague was visiting from overseas and he had read about it in a travel magazine and insisted on going there against my advice. He was paying so I didn't get upset about it. In the event I think I started to understand a bit more what the place is about. It really caters primarily to the 'foodie' sub-culture, people who dine out incessantly and regard themselves as experts in all kinds of cuisine. My friend and I, who thought the food palatable but a bit over elaborate and a lot over-priced, would be regarded as philistines by the rest of the clientele who from what we could overhear talked of nothing else but what they were eating. This does given the place the feel of a the kind of wine tasting event at which nobody actually gets drunk but is anxious to show off their discernment. It doesn't exactly create a buzzy environment although it wasn't full when we where there. Have enjoyed La Trompette more but it can get a bit noisy and they do tend to cram too many tables in - although this may have changed since the extension was built. I'd suggest the Glasshouse in Kew as the best local place for a special meal out at the moment. |
