A couple of summers ago I took a trip along the Bristol Channel on Waverley (last sea going paddle steamer afloat) and as part of her seaworthy certificate they practised an air sea rescue off her deck.

The noise and  power of approaching helicopter then coming directly overhead, lowering the winch man to deck level to affect a mock rescue gave me an insight to how bloody marvellous that sight would have been if it were for real.

It brought a large lump to my throat I can tell you.
