Jill, you did the best thing by taking the poor damaged bird to a vet - even in our less stressed neck of the woods, the RSPCA are not too bothered about injured birds as they are so inundated with calls about other creatures.

I say this because my brother-in-law witnessed an RSPCA officer finish off a bird by thwacking it's head against the back of his van - probably the quickest way, but if that was how they were going to treat the bird, my BiL always wished he had shot the bird himself some hours before the RSPCA turned up and saved it's suffering. One just tries to do the 'correct' thing at the time.

We rescued a tern some time ago which was in a bad way with cars driving round it (it was in the middle of the road by the river) and we took it straight to our vets, who euthanized it humanely. We offered to pay but they said it was okay.
