When buying a car I have sat down at a car dealers and made a bank transfer in front of him and given him a copy of the confirmation, but it is much easier if the dealer can take debit or credit card payments - provided you pre-warn your card issuer. I tried to pay Robins & Day over the phone for some expensive repairs to my wife's Peugeot last week and the card company obviously thought R&D were a dodgy outfit and refused the payment until I had made contact with them. Regarding the original post, a bank transfer would be an obvious alternative, but if you have really serious doubts about the buyer you might not want to risk providing him with your bank details. Another option would be PayPal, when you only have to provide your e-mail address. |
