Paul, I was very careful to say that because Gabriella gave us no details about what she said to the warden, we don't know what triggered this odd outburst. She could have been exquisitely polite, or verging on aggressive - we simply don't know. It just seems very strange that someone would start abusing her and commenting on her husband, for no reason at all. Well, it seems odd to me. On the other hand, traffic wardens do suffer a very high level of abuse and aggression in the course of their day's work, so perhaps some of them have developed a sensitive hair trigger when it comes to dealing with the public. They are considered to be barely above pond life by many people and I guess some of them might develop a touchy defence mechanism when someone challenges them. For example, Felicity's claim that they all hide behind the town hall drinking coffee all day and only emerge a few times each day to issue tickets to motorists parking next to the post office seems a bit far fetched. I see wardens all over Chiswick, not just next to the town hall. That was just a standard example of the demonisation of traffic wardens who after all are just doing a job. I wasn't witness to Gabriella's conversation, and she has given us very little to go on, except her view that this particular warden should be disciplined for offending her. Maybe he did, maybe he felt that she was offending him, we are all so very easily offended these days. I am just saying that it seems like there might be a little more to this. |
