'They could always persuade some veteran MP like Gerald Kaufman that it was a good moment to apply for the Chiltern Hundreds and then take a seat in the Lords.' Why should the tax payer have to pay for a by-election in such circumstances? With fixed-term parliaments, MPs should be given five-year contracts and not allowed just to stand down when it happens to suit them, the way David Miliband did, say, or Tony Blair. And, yes, both of those happened to be Labour MPs but my OP was not an attack on Labour, as some seem to think, but on the attitude of politicians of all parties. |
