| Pete - the UK spent £72m on hiring foreign nurses last year. Some trusts even paid for flights and accommodation to attract them. One of the advantages of hiring foreign nurses is they tend to have better training than UK ones. UK universities tend to focus on academic themes rather than practical hands on training. For example there is no training on how to take blood or insert a cannula. The opportunity for the UK to hire better trained nurses and avoid any training costs is clear therefore. If we compare the costs of this hiring programme against the total NHS expenditure of £113bn in 2014 this is fractional. Total expenditure has mushroomed from £64bn in 2004. The government have pledged a further £8bn but are planning to cut 2,000 UK nurses from the current army of over 377,000 with over 5,000 nurses being hired from Spain last year and plans to hire Chinese ones.India, Ghana, South Africa, Jamaica, and the Phillippines are all large contributors. Public demonstrations in some of these countries have been held against the drain to the UK however clearly economic conditions and wages are driving them to leave. |
