| Pete - it's simple supply demand economics as far as nursing is concerned. Last year the UK had 15,500 nurses qualifying however despite this there is a national shortage of 22,000. To make up for the shortfall the government is actively recruiting from foreign countries to bridge the supply gap. Many foreign nurses are poorly paid relative to their UK counterparts so there is an economic incentive for them to come here. One in three foreign nurses coming to the UK only last six months here and move on to countries like the US or Dubai for higher earnings. UK. The retention rate of UK qualified nurses is also low with many seeking higher wages like foreign nurses. The impetus to leave the NHS is being further compounded by poor staff patient ratios with stress, long hours and poor morale all playing their part in nurses leaving what was once considered a vocation rather than something for financial gain. |
