| I'm sorry but I have to stick my oar in here, boys. Richard, you and I went to uni when only 10% of the teenage population did - the competition was less. It's around 40% now. This is why all this talk of "grade inflation" makes me cross. Grades are going up because children are expected to work much harder and pressure on students is far greater than it was in our day. Plus the exam season starts much earlier. It may well be that you had lots of fun as an exam-taking teenager back in the 1980s. Any parent taking his or her year 11 or year 12 children on an extended holiday in the Easter holidays in 2015 would be irresponsible. (A2/year 13 is slightly different as they don't start until late May/early June) I am speaking here both as a secondary school teacher and as a parent of three children who have gone through GCSEs and A levels. The school I teach at also had compulsory revision sessions in the Easter holidays. Most schools these days do. We have no choice - you can, if you like, blame Gove and his 'rigour'. |
