The Party Wall Act 1996 places a legal obligation on building owners to serve notice and obtain their neighbour’s consent for work that will affect shared (party) walls or areas of land. Loft conversions are among the most common structural alterations that fall within the act. It's only if your neighbour refuses consent that you would need to appoint a surveyor. Hope that helps. |
