Richard, you have a fairly fundamental misunderstanding of what is going on here not least your apparent belief than Nicola Horlick was borrowing the money from investors. They were providing an equity stake for the purchase of a restaurant. The nature of the way the money is being raised meant that no deposit could be place on the property she wished to acquire. She identified it, negotiated a price and then, when the money was raised, it would appear that the vendor changed the terms of the sale. Such a risk would have been highlighted in the offer document and the cost of setting up the investment could only be born at this time by the investors so the choice was get your money back minus the cost of the fund-raising exercise or leave it in the company with a view to pursuing another similar venture. As I said earlier most people would have been backing Nicola Horlick not the idea of a specific restaurant in a specific area. You may object to crowdfunding but you should be aware that currently given the dysfunctional state of our banking industry it is the main supplier of debt and equity capital to the small and medium sized business sector. Without it there would probably be zero growth in the economy. It may be less regulated than bank lending but that is why it is able to fill the cap left by hamstrung banks. |
