I've never actually eaten the stuff but I do have a charming illustrated book by the late Denholm Elliot detailing its history. It was originally the preserve (or should that be condiment!) of the upper middle classes and served in silver dishes apparently. When it became more widely used, it was delivered house to house by donkey cart. Some how it ended up being served directly out of the bottle in a million transport cafes.
