Last night I was walking my dog around St Michael's church and at the junction with Woodstock Road, found a new street lamp had been installed. Not only was it blindingly bright but was considerably higher than the existing lights in the area taking the lamp heads into the tree canopy and to first floor bedroom window height. I have learnt that there is to be a 'public consultation' tonight beside that light but it is at 4pm when it does not get dark until after 5pm. The lamp standard is ridiculously tall and also unaesthetically pleasing and does nothing to improve or enhance the street scene of the area. This is a lovely area to walk round and the soft light improves the ambiance. Please will as many people as possible attend the meeting to assess the lamp and make their views known. You will be told that it improves safety and gives people a sense of security. This is rubbish and only in very dark corners will it be so. It is a disgrace to use this excuse to make residents and visitors and dog walkers, etc. feel insecure unless these lights are installed. |
