This is nothing new. Chariot Racing was the most popular Roman sport. Super star Gaius Appuleius Diocles won 1,462 out of his 4,257 races.

When Diocles retired at the age of 42 after a 24 year career his winnings reportedly totalled 35,863,120 sesterces (equivalent according to Wikipedia of $US 15 billion). Some say he was the highest paid sports star in history.
