"It seems like they must drop these barriers when the train reaches Putney.Why do they have to be down for so long " In the down (out of London) direction they tend to close the crossing when the train is approaching Chiswick, so it has to brake, stop, let people on and off, close the doors and accelerate before it gets to the crossing. In the up direction it's usually a lot faster. It's a function of being relatively close to a station on a line which the vast majority of trains stop at. |
