You've only got to look at the empty pitches in your local park. The council decide to charge regular users a not insignificant sum for the use of a free facility. The users decide it's not worth it. The facility becomes unused (no-one wants to use a full size pitch for a kick about). The council decide the pitch is not wanted after all, and neglect it. The area becomes neglected and changing facilities vandalised. Finally, they sell it off.... And then everyone moans about how nobody is doing any exercise. Personally I think it is a good use of my council tax to maintain areas for free sporting activities - as long as it's amateur etc. |
