One of the great advantages of the UK government electoral system is that it makes regular changes of government at Westminster possible, due to a balanced electorate. Had the Scots voted to secede, it would have made it that much harder for Labour to form a majority government in EWNI. Now while my heart tells me that would be a blessing, my head tells me that it is never good for any political party or grouping to remain in power ad infinitum, as that inevitably leads to stagnation and abuse of power.

The problem with many local councils is that they rarely, if ever, change the ruling grouping. LB Hounslow has been dominated by Labour for most of its existence. One result was the annual increase in council tax in the years leading up to their rare loss of control, and another is the impression that there are some very rum goings-on currently being covered up by the ruling grouping. Unfortunately it seems unlikely that control of the council will change at any time in the next few years, and this will allow them to continue on their merry way unless and until enough of the electorate see the light and eject them.
