Fewer than 10% Dan! Obviously stats and research methods vary, but the numbers are always very low.

The evidence is also all around in the lack of recall and basic obedience and in "professional" dog wakers who are uninsured and uniformed. I took a straw poll of owners at my training class last night and only two of us used dog walkers who had any kind of training and accreditation and who were insured, and this is amongst more informed owners.

I was showing last weekend and the judge asked each owner for a simple sit, down and walk to heel with a turn. We were the only combination in the class that managed it. Whilst it's nice to have a red rosette, it is shocking that it is because the other owners had so little control.

Of course we all have moments when our dogs become selectively deaf or when we don't react in the optimal way. My dog and I are far from perfect, but at least we attempt constant improvement which means that in an emergency, my dog is more likely to react in a way that will keep both of us safe.
