I don’t understand why stamp duty doesn’t get abolished and is replaced by capital gains tax on the sale of your property. This would take the burden off first time buyers and place it onto people who have accumulated equity on their property. The rates could be altered to place a higher burden on higher valued properties and those selling a second property. If a property is unoccupied for more than 6 months the council should have to right to find a tenant for the property or charge a large amount of council tax in lieu of this (like £50k a year) – this should stop people buying homes and just using them as stores of value… measures like this would surely stop a mansion tax being necessary whilst bringing as much supply into the market as possible? |
