A few years ago I was at a friend's house in the garden on a hot afternoon. Suddenly we heard an alarm ringing and thought someone's burglar alarm had gone off. Then we saw smoke billowing out of the top floor of the neighbour's house. We rang the fire department and they came and eventually put out what was a very serious fire. (That alarm we heard had been the smoke alarm.) Later on we found out that sunlight coming through the windows (south facing) had hit a magnifying mirror on a dressing table and then bounced off onto the curtains which smouldered and eventually caught fire. |
