Surely the point here is that MPs representing constituencies outside of London and the South East need to run two households (or camp out in hotels). This is bound to be expensive and well beyond the financial resources of most people. This is of course fine if you are already independently wealthy (Tony Blair), your rich friends will give a deposit (Lord Mandelson), your Trade Union lends you a house rent free (Lord Prescott) or you are married to an MP and can pool your resources (Ann Keen). The issue here is not low pay but about how much we are prepared to pay to be properly represented at Westminster. This was after all a basic demand of the Chartists. Do we really want our MPs to be drawn soley from the ranks of the independently wealthy or to be in the pockets of "high net worth" individuals and powerful pressure groups, not to say foreign Governments (Lord Jack Jones)? |
