Thanks Vanessa and David. Of course I care deeply about the millions of people who died, so this commemoration is in addition. I care about the millions of horses who were slaughtered too.

My own father was forced to move across Austria when his family were displaced in 1918 and I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for the further devastation that WWII wreaked on my paternal family.

This is also not the only event in which I have participated this year. I will be singing with the Royal Choral Society in Benjamin Britten's War Requiem on Remembrance Sunday at the Royal Albert Hall in November and raising funds for Veterans Aid, a charity that was set up in the aftermath of the Great War. So please do come to that and any other similar events when you want to commemorate people - or organise your own.

However, in the meantime, as dogs are a big part of my life, and as they were for many people in the Great War, I am organising a small local tribute to them - and their handlers and trainers as well. As the Animal War memorial in Hyde Park states "They had no choice".

I have confirmation of inclusion from the LIGHTS OUT campaign and I quote Emma Casey, the Campaign Producer:
"Hi Charlotte, Thanks for getting in touch. As a dog lover myself I think this is a really lovely idea."

If you have any queries about the legitimacy of the event, please contact Emma at 14-18NOW LIGHTS OUT. I think that there is a backlog of information waiting to be posted on their site which is why you may not have seen this event listed.

I apologise for the initial error on the time, but I can confirm that candles will be lit at 22.00hrs. I will certainly be thinking about a myriad of things that occurred during the War and in current conflicts as I light my candle.

I hope that you will join me.
