Can someone explain: '- why its better to half 50% of school leavers go into tertiary education than the 20% that went 30 years ago? ' A higher level of education is better for social and economic reasons. The smarter we get the better standard of living everyone has, in simple terms. The expense more than covers it's self. 'If there were less students and fewer university courses then the money would go further. We might even be able to afford free university educations. Imagine that.' That would only work if you think very short term. Long term cutting courses severly would lead to less people in the UK being able to go to university. '- why so many students today do business study courses and then aim to work in the city? If banks are so evil then surely these intelligent young people would aim for a higher calling.' The city pays well and you don't need to be that smart to do well in the city. Many do go off and study 'higher callings' but if you're going to do a business degree you've already declared your intent early on. The above argument also shows up why the argument that if we raise taxes on banks and lower bonuses then the 'talent' will move elsewhere. The talent are very replaceable by new bright people who will work for much less and consider it a lot and do an equally good job. |
