'It is detrimental to confuse 'getting a university education' with 'doing something vocational'. ' It is true that many people end up doing work unrelated to their degree. It is also true that much of what university is about is the art of learning and thinking. My arguement is that you can teach people how to think and aim for a course to be vocational. I say this because I am one of the few people who did a degree, got all the benefits of doing a degree and also am still working in the area my degree covered! This is mostly because I thought it through and didn't just pick a degree that sounded nice (and yes some do this). So why don't more people end up working in a field directly related to their degree? In my view it's because many institutions see 'vocational' as a nasty word - there is comparatively little effort in linking courses with final employment. Many university students leave a degree thinking they are the bees knees and fall into a kind of gap at the end of their degree. They can't get a job, have no money, end up staying where they did their degree or moving back home and end up working in an office. I've seen this happen a lot and it's a failing with our current university model. It does not have to be the case as I worked out prior to leaving university, thanks to the hindsight of a handful of people I met who had fallen into that 'gap' and where still hanging around the university. |
