| Local businesses deciding to have deliveries done by cargo bike is in principle a good thing. Very much back to the future as the butchers lad delivering by bike was a common thing before mass ownership of cars and vans. Obviously it is not appropriate for every business but the issue is whether this is being done for economic reasons - namely, that the existence of cycle lanes makes it quicker and safer - or because the creation of strict LTNs in key customer areas has effectively made it impossible to deliver any other way. To put in simpler terms are businesses shifting because of the carrot or the stick. The problem is that if the shift is solely because of the stick then for businesses whose products are not capable of being moved by cargo bike we may end up with areas of Chiswick for which deliveries of those type of product cease, of course based on comments in this forum in the past it may be that we already have such delivery deserts For me the bigger problem with cargo bikes seems to be an excessive number of product recalls for safety reasons; Babboe did a product recall in March, Raleigh did the same (they share the same platform with Babboe), Vogue have done a product recall this month and apparently the Dutch authorities are currently looking at Cangoo and Bakfiels. Hopefully this is just a temporary blip |
