As you might know, the proper process must be followed for a Section 21 Notice to be valid and, ultimately, a Court Order could be required to impose it. If you wish to contest or delay this, it could be that, with such a long tenancy, not all the required supporting paperwork is in place. Advice is available from Crisis, Shelter, Citizens Advice, or specialist solicitors.

The new Renters Rights legislation is certainly causing many private landlords to withdraw from the sector and for those that remain to be more particular about who they take on as tenants.
