Janice I am really sorry that you feel unsafe enough to make these changes to your lifestyle. Can I ask what is causing you to feel this way?
As a woman I feel quite safe going about the city alone by day and by night, as do my daughters and most other women I know. Statistics show the streets are safer than they were and this is born out by my own anecdotal experience. In the eighties, when I was a teenager, London was rough - not a weekend went by without someone we knew (usually male) being the victim of violent street crime. In the last few years I do know teenagers who have been robbed or attacked but no older friends at all.
I am not discounting your fears but I do think you might find this article interesting.
