| Francis is right that the proportion of vans has increased, on both the flyover and the rest of LBHF, but he's wrong to assume this is associated with an increase in overall traffic. It's quite the opposite, as the DfT traffic counts show. As the proportion of vans on both the flyover and all of LBHF has risen, total vehicle counts have fallen: for LBHF, the proportion of vans has increased from 11 to 17% while traffic counts have fallen by 27%, and car counts by 35% ; for the flyover, van counts have increased from 9% to 16% while traffic counts have fallen by 31% and car counts by 37%. On current trends, every 1% increase in the portion of vans on the flyover means a 7% drop in overall traffic counts. The idea that we need to increase road capacity to accommodate more vans doesn't reflect what is happening. Rather, an increase in vans is associated with a drop in total traffic. This likely reflects that delivery companies are better at organising their collective logistics to minimise the mileage for drop-offs compared to individual car drivers picking up the same. |
