Best not to leave anything on view in cars, it's sometimes difficult when you have passengers as they may leave items on the back seats so always check before you leave your vehicle.  Also never put your jacket on the back of a chair when eating out, or send it to a cloakroom, my friend had to run after a woman leaving a restaurant with her coat that she had left safely
she thought in their cloakroom, I did tell her not to and she just said yeah it's o.k , no it wasn't, keep your coats close by or on your lap, jackets on the back of chairs have wallets stolen, also bags keep them nearby or wear crossbody bag if eating out.  My friend did get her coat back without a fight fortunately.
