| Drummers are a pain in the arse ... Drums are an incredibly physical instrument to play and the people that play them tend to be hooligans. Putting pads or covers on an acoustic kit is not an option as the feel is completely different. My parents made me put sheets over my kit when I practised but all that did was to make me hit them harder, the result being that when I removed the sheets I was a very heavy hitting and naturally loud drummer. As it turns out this stood me in good stead but it's not to be advised. There are mesh heads available now that are actually very good and go some way to replicating the feel and response of a real drum head but at about 25% of the volume. Electronic kits (or eKits) are great but they don't have the same 'feel' as an acoustic kit and the cheaper ones can actually damage your wrists. It's also wrong to assume that eKits are silent as they really aren't. Although they remove the acoustic aspect of the drums you are still left with the fact that a wooden stick hitting a piece of plastic is very loud. In particular the kick drum (bass drum) is almost impossible to render silent due to the fact that the way the footpedal works means you are essentially stamping on the ground. You really don't want to live underneath a drummer with an eKit ... Ideally any drums but in particular eDrums should be on a concrete floor or at the very least on the ground floor with no rooms below them. I have seen people construct small wooden stages for eDrums with tennis balls underneath to disconnect the drums from the floor and although it's better than nothing it's always going to be loud. |
