I don't know anything specific about Sainsbury's but supermarkets providing this service is out of fashion. A lot of these across the borough have been closed or radically changed. I believe what drove Morrisons to close it in Brentford was that one (or more) of the 'We clear your junk' experts found it more profitable dumping in Morrisons car park than to accept the bore and cost of taking it to an official dump. Also the economics of recycling are very variable. Textiles are in high demand now, so all of sudden Morrisons have their own textile box and also a Sally Army box in Brentford. It also depends on how people use it. Our disciplined recycling at LBH means we can get significant income for our recycling to set against the costs of disposing of general waste (typically around £120 per tonne) and garden waste (about £30 last time I checked). I suspect what people dumped in Sainsburys was not very disciplined and ended up not being recycled at all, or only having being resorted by hand at a sorting centre. At Hounslow's SOuthall Lane centre we do a little sorting (typically removing plastic film and hard plastics) but that's 2 people doing all the sorting we do for 87000 properties. The rest of our sorting is automated.
