Doesn't look like we'll be seeing the OP again.  Just passing through I suppose.  A pity..

Meanwhile can't find this Cato website with tons of fab pics mentioned by Dave.  But I did turn up Carolyn & Peter Hammond's book Chiswick Through Time which has a wonderful photo of the original Cato's shop at 46 Duke Road (chapter 5)..

Anyway (OP or no OP) I've had another rummage..

Like I said, OP's orphaned grandad Sydney was living in 1911 is the home of William James Cato (father of Cato shop founder William Henry Cato) at 43 Devonshire Road.  This 1911 census tells us that William James was a self-employed counterman (shopkeeper) in the oil and color(sic) industry.

Also living there was William's 87 year old widowed mum Martha who was to die the following year.  Whilst 16 year old Sydney, (the main focus of this search|) was also working as an assistant in oil and color.  Almost certainly meaning he was helping out in the Duke Road shop.   So the OP's grandad would have known the whole family.  Very well indeed.

William Henry James in 1911 was running his shop in 1911 at 46 Duke Road and the census tells us that he too was a self-employed oil and colorman.   And we know from the original photo of this shop that it was definitely in William Henry's name (WH Cato in big letters across the doorway).

So it suggests that father and son started out in business together.  Yet (possibly because William James was well into his old age by 1902 when the shop was founded) it was put in the name of his pioneering son.

Can't prove it (not worth me sending for a Cato death certificate) but it appears William Henry died in the 4th quarter of 1912.

Bit complicated and hard to follow I know. Sorry about that....
