As I was saying to a client only a few days ago:

This is a total scam and any such calls should be hung-up upon immediately, and don't use your landline for at least 10 minutes to make sure they haven't done the old 'we haven't hung up trick' to suck you in further. Use a mobile to call your service provider if you're in doubt.

Also, your internet service provider will always write to you either by post or via email, addressing you by your account name (real name on who gets the bill). Not as “Dear BT Customer” or otherwise. They would also suspend your broadband service if you were compromised and distributing infections or content which is illegal.

Basically they will never call you out of the blue to talk security - EVER!
