Mrs M and I paid our annual visit to the Great British Beer Festival at Earl’s Court t’other evening. I noticed a large stall selling gorgeous-looking pies. “Aha, I’m off tomorrow – something from here will do very nicely for lunch.”

Mmm... smoked ham and mustard... just the ticket. Lunch the following day couldn’t come soon enough and all morning the anticipation built as I waited for the British Gas engineer to arrive to give the boiler its annual service.

He arrived, did his stuff and left. Lunchtime at last!

But oh! What a disappointing pie!

Smoked ham and mustard? Two very distinctive flavours, neither of which was detectable in this bland lump of grey something encased in pastry. Luckily, I had a nice spicy piccalilli (Waitrose) and some pickled slices of jalapeno to enliven me palate.

Is there anything worse than being let down by a pie?

There should be a law against savouries that fail to live up to expectations. Who has the pies portfolio in the Coalition?
