| China is decarbonising at a phenomenal rate. At the same time becoming the global leaders in green energy technology and exporting it to the rest of the world. Its planted 66 billion trees to halt the spread of desertification from the Gobi and Taklamakan deserts. Terrible human rights etc. but seen the writing on the wall with climate change and the economic potential of renewables. Green energy is the cheapest to produce, we pay so much in the UK because the cost of energy is tied to the highest cost producer which is natural gas. I believe the argument goes, you have to make people pay for the highest cost energy to incentivise them to continue to invest in producing it, as its needed as a backstop if its cloudy and no wind. On very windy days they have to turn off the wind turbines in Scotland as there's nowhere for the energy to go because there isn't the infrastructure to bring it where its needed. |
