Net zero is the only real means we have to minimise what is already a climate emergency and one that will only get worse. And the longer the world refuses to act  the worse it will be. Of course it will take time to reduce the impact of historical emissions but scientists who have spent their careers studying climate  believe that the least worse outcome requires quickly moving to net zero. Otherwise within a couple of hundred years life will be pretty much impossible, with much higher temperatures in the northern hemisphere than even in this summer, much higher seas with eg most of East Anglia under water.

We can and must adapt but when fire, floods, crop failure, or war resulting from a fight for land/resources come our way no adaptation will help.

Sure the UK has done way more than most but its emissions per head are still pretty high.  Net zero by 2050 is achievable and getting there offers all kinds of opportunities to be a world leader in renewable and storage technology. China, currently a huge polluter has and is investing in renewables and plans to get to net zero by 2060. Russia and the US are the main current obstacles to progress.

The UK needs to join with the rest of Europe and argue the case for net zero. It may well fail but it is our only hope
