On Friday evening after my wife had completed her hospital shift we decided to have a drink at the London Apprentice, the riverside pub in Isleworth. We got there about 10:15, collected our drinks from the bar, and went to sit outside on the riverside terrace, so we could enjoy the warm evening and watch the birds on the river. We were then informed that under LBH's licensing rules the terrace had to be closed at 10:00 so that the neighbours would not be disturbed, and had to take our drinks back inside. If the information we were given is correct, then it seems that LBH are potentially damaging the prospects of a pub that has been there for centuries and has just undergone a refurbishment. As far as the neighbours are concerned, if you move in near a pub then you can expect a certain amount of noise, and stopping people having a quiet drink outdoors seems excessive. We were also told that LBH has stopped customers of the pub from sitting on the riverside patch of grass which used to have tables and chairs. After the recent fuss about sitting outside the pubs on Strand-on-the-Green, does anyone know if they are also subject to the 10:00 rule, or does it just apply to the London Apprentice ? Our new PM, Andy Burnham, has expressed a desire to assist pubs. Perhaps he could have a word with the Labour council in Hounslow who do not seem to have got the message.
