There seems to be a bit of wishful thinking going on here. There shouldn't be any surprise that the minister has been non-committal at this point. Labour announced a fairly significant programme of infrastructure spending which, with the exception of the HS2 extension to Euston was outside London. Even that could be argued to be primarily for the benefit of the rest of the country. Whether Hammersmith Bridge would have been on that list if some of the technical issues is hard to say and now we have additional economic and financial uncertainty from the Trump election victory so a good reasons for ministers to choose their words carefully and not raise expectations. If he doesn't go ahead with massive tariff increases stoking an economic downturn and higher inflation and interest rates, we might find that by spring 2025 things look a bit better. The key indicator that Hammersmith Bridge actually was not going to be fully opened would be what the opposition are saying about it. They won't make a fuss until they believe Labour are actually going to deliver. They are very quiet at the moment which could be an indication of the lack of any effective opposition or could indicate that they believe Labour will pull something out of the hat. |
