| Simon Lightwood, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Transport, wrote to Andrew Boff, Chair of the London Assembly on 31st October. Here is what he says about the bridge being open to walking and cycling: "The first stabilisation phase of works is now expected to complete in Spring 2025, and will ensure that the bridge can safely remain open to pedestrians, cyclists and river traffic on a permanent basis. These works are also inclusive of the DfT-funded work to temporarily resurface the Hammersmith Bridge carriageway, which will allow cyclists to once again use the Bridge without first dismounting". So just one more winter to go until cyclists can use the bridge properly again and permanently. Good news. He also confirms that the purpose of the Taskforce he has reconvened and will Chair is to "provide a valuable forum for interested local stakeholders to discuss the progress of the repair works taking place". Anything else is subject to the Treasury's Spending Review of the DfT's capital spending review, which concludes Spring 2025. It would be the most optimistic of car lobbyists who would read that letter and see hope that they will one way drive over Hammersmith Bridge again. But good news for cyclists. |
