The hurtigruten is a Norwegian service, predominantly calling the Norwegian coast, although the Noggies still have a whale spearing industry, so boycotting that might be appropriate. The Faroes are a nominally independent Danish protectorate whose population would (almost) fit twice over into Wembley stadium, their major industry is fishing, but I couldn't tell you where most of their exports go. The Faroes still derive upto 13% of their income from Danish aid, so possibly hitting their paymasters might have more effect, I don't know.
There are records of the grindadrap dating back to the 1500s but given the level of mercury contamination in the meat nowadays it's considered borderline fit for human consumption, so given enough time this may be a self solving problem as consumption is linked to high blood pressure, damaged immune system, increased risk for developing Parkinson's disease, hypertension, arteriosclerosis, and type 2 diabetes.
As unquestionably repugnant as I find this practice, it's worth noting that several studies have suggested that the estimated long term annual kill of some 800 pilot whales does not materially impact the north Atlantic population of some 128,000, and is considered sustainable. Much in the same way that first nation Canadian & Greenland whaling is. It just so happens that this is on our doorstep, so to speak. |
