Bruce you are absolutely correct when you say "They even seem to have tweaked the approach so that it's right over us" They have you're not imagining it. There are a number of reasons Heathrow has done this, one is to soften us up into getting used to it, but the main reason for pushing the northern final approach further northwards(effecting more of south Chiswick)is to get the legal separation required to achieve parallel landing on both runways.So increasing the number of flights per hour/day. It's expansion without the costs of expansion.
