| On hearing the news... and writing an entry on the local Forum, one thinks of moments we were connected to him. In 1957 I was challenged to hitch-hike from Chiswick Roundabout to John O'Groats in 3 days. I departed at 4pm and travelling overnight arrived in Edinburgh next day and booked in at the Youth Hotel. Unbelievably Chris Barber was on stage at the Usher Hall that evening. I went,enjoyed but had to leave early to get back to the Hostel befote the door closed at 10pm. As I made my way to the exit via rambling corridors...I saw Chris walking towards me.. he having a breather. He enquired why I was leaving before the end of the Show..and he wished me well. On another occasion I took myself on a ski holiday at a little known place called Lenzerheide in Switzerland. I booked in at my hotel at 9pm and enquired what's going on in this quiet place tonight."Oh there's a Chris Barber's Jazz Band playing in the place opposite! I dashed over and in the entrance hall the Band were assembled having a break! Memories! You too? |
