Chris Barber formed his first band in 1953 which
included the likes of Lonnie Donegan and Monty Sunshine.
The band was then joined by trumpeter Ken Collier.
Because Collier had joined the Merchant Navy simply
on order to visit New Orleans, the birthplace of jazz
and was subsequently deported, the band was re-named
in his honour.

In the late 50's and early 60's Barber teamed up with
the blues musician Alexis Korner and arranged for
visits to the UK by legendary US Blues artists,
at a time when blues was unknown both the UK.
and to white audiences in the US.

This then led to the birth of homegrown
UK blues groups, who encouraged by Chris Barber
originally simply played filler spots in the
programmes of traditional jazz bands playing the
clubs - the Ealing Club being one such.

Later on UK blues groups separated entirely from
their trad jazz associations. It was at this point
around 1963 that John Mayall formed the Bluesbreakers
most notable as being a stepping stone for guitarists
such as Eric Clapton, Peter Green, Mick Taylor.
