Without being against such a wonderful plan/suggestion I wouldn’t wish my old laptop (6/7 year old Lenovo) on my worst enemy....it’s slow, incredibly heavy, completely useless and so frustrating to use - I took the advice of the IT Department at the school where I work who inspected it for me and bought a new one - they told me it was so out of date nothing would improve its performance, that it was not fit for purpose. What I would really like to see is donations of new eg Chrome books which are relatively simple and perfectly functional for education purposes and not terribly expensive. It would be absolutely wonderful for new-ish, unwanted laptops to be donated and even better if there was a way any company including computer/IT companies could commit to buying as many new laptops as their budget allowed and donated to those vulnerable children who have no hope of owning one. Also the additional problem is the cost of access to broadband at home. The cost of installing and paying for broadband is prohibitive to many families....and it would appear that very financially restricted families are using their smart phones to download online teaching which is phenomenally expensive....and multiple children families using the same device multiplies not only the cost but frustrations. It’s a bit like offering microwave meals to someone who doesn’t have a microwave...well intended but poorly thought out. I hope there’s a solution for these children but I think old laptops is a questionable one. Thank you and I hope I’ve not offended anyone |
