Hi Sam,

On your last point, laying aside the prejorative language, I think most people would accept that the laws of supply and demand apply to travel by car. For example if petrol prices rise, people generally travel less by car, either by cutting back on discretionary travel or selecting different modes. Such a response is just following a well established principle of basic economics.

Are you therefore suggesting that there is completely inelasticity of demand in the areas these schemes cover? That implies that every single journey by car is both completely necessary and has no viable alternative. To believe that might require religious faith in the absence of any particular evidence.

As an example, the school run has become part of many people's day. However, in my, and likely your, day it was not the expected way of children getting to school, visiting their friends and doing other after-school activities. We made our own way around. In fact my own children managed to get through various schools in Chiswick and play in teams and orchestras without being ferried around by car.

Rather than being necessary travel, I'd argue something has been lost in childhood  in terms of independence and knowing your own neighbourhood if your main mode of travel is on the back seat of a car.
